A piece of software for obtaining crystal structure and visualizing three-dimensional data that runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X platforms. It can handle 30 structure data formats and 17 volumetric data formats for input, and 13 structure data formats and 6 volumetric data formats for output. It is distributed free of charge in binary format for noncommercial purposes.

History of VESTA

VESTA is originated from two applications, VICS and VEND, developed by R. A. Dilanian and F. Izumi during 2001-2004. VICS was for visualization of crystal structures, and VEND was for visualization of volumetric data. These programs were written in C language, and had many limitations because of their design concept. In 2004, K. Momma started to develop a succeeding application in C++, employing modern user interface framework wxWidgets. In June 2005, VICS-II was released as a successor to VICS, and features of VEND were further integrated into VICS-II to form a new, integrated visualization system VESTA.
